Isabel, born in São Paulo, Brazil, and raised in Steveston, British Columbia began working in ceramics in 2011 at Emily Carr University, leading to a fine arts diploma at Langara College and later transferring to Emily Carr's Bachelors of Visual Arts, majoring in ceramics and printmaking. Shifting from traditional ceramic form, she explored abstraction, texture, and colour. In 2021, Isabel founded Báhoo Studio, a ceramics school and interdisciplinary artist space.
Her artistic practice explores the body, control, and failure through clay sculpture, emphasizing her ever evolving lived experience. Isabel's works, primarily built and sculpted on the potter's wheel, engage abstract expressionism, inviting viewers to interpret and project themselves into the evolving entities she creates, celebrating the interplay between control and spontaneity.
"I want to make vessels that have the intervention of the body. I started off with self portraiture. Thinking about how to translate my human experience into an ethereal physical object. My body, my mind, how the world feels; the vessel and my bodily intervention. As if creating another language entirely."
